Your Unique Vehicle Requires Unique Auto Insurance

Most Nevadans who are shopping around for auto insurance are looking for coverage for their everyday vehicle – the one that they use to drive to and from work, run errands, and ferry their children to various extracurricular activities. However, if you own a sports or exotic car, your driving habits are probably considerably different. It makes sense, therefore, that your auto insurance coverage should be different as well.

Is Your Vehicle an Exotic or Sports Car?

Your auto insurance company uses a vehicle’s make, model, horsepower, size, weight and number of cylinders to classify it as a sports or exotic car. In most cases, sports cars are smaller and have less seating than the average sedan. They may also have an engine that is specially built for competitive racing.

Exotic cars are generally limited, customized, exclusive or concept cars. They’re not necessarily built for racing, but they often have unique, out-of-the-ordinary features.

What Affects Insurance Rates for Exotic or Sports Cars?

In most cases, the more horsepower a car has, the faster it can go, increasing the driver’s risk of getting a speeding ticket or being responsible for an accident. While this may result in higher auto insurance premiums, that may be offset by the fact that most sports or exotic car owners only drive their vehicle for recreational purposes, which can result in lower auto insurance premiums.

If you own a sports car that you only drive around on the weekends or to shows and you put less than 5,000 miles on it annually, then your monthly auto insurance premiums will generally be smaller than that of someone who uses their sports car as their primary vehicle.

Why Does It Cost So Much to Insure?

How much you drive your car has a significant impact on your auto insurance rate, but it’s not the only thing that affects your monthly premium. Even sports and exotic vehicles that only see the light of day a few times a month often cost more to insure than your average sedan. This is because from the auto insurance company’s standpoint, these vehicles are a bigger risk to insure.

These vehicles are more likely to be stolen, particularly if they’re a convertible that is easy to enter. Additionally, unlike popular makes and models with mass-produced parts that are easily replaced, sports and exotic vehicles generally have custom-made parts. These parts are more expensive, difficult to find and may require the expertise of a technician who specializes in repairing these types of cars. Finally, exotic and sports cars generally lack modern safety features like lane departure warning systems, adaptive cruise control and backup cameras, increasing the likelihood of the vehicle being involved in a collision.

Other Vehicles Hard to Get Insurance For

It is tricky to insure private passenger vehicles. “Private Passenger” simply means 4 wheels, motorized, passenger vehicles that are licensed and registered, and used for personal use, not business use. Some vehicles are simply more difficult to get auto insurance for.

This also applies to damage that occurs after the accident. While you may consider the damage from the accident and the damage from the tow truck to be all one incident, your insurer will view it differently.

A Friend Wrecked My Car, What Happens Next?

If your friend was hit by an insured driver, the process will be simple enough. The at-fault driver will file a claim with their insurance company, who will pay to get your vehicle back to pre-accident condition. If the collision was bad enough to cause an injury, the at-fault driver’s auto insurance could also cover medical bills, lost wages and any other expenses associated with the accident.

Why Every Household Driver Should Be On Your Auto Insurance Policy

Generally speaking, anyone who lives with you that has a drivers license – whether they’re a member of your family or not – is considered by your insurer to be a member of your household. College students away from home without a vehicle aren’t required to be on a policy, and could be a “permissive” driver.
